There’s something undeniably magical about pelicans—the way they glide just inches above the water, soar effortlessly through the sky, and dive with complete confidence into the sea. Whether they’re floating solo, basking in the sun, or flying in formation, pelicans always seem to be living their best, unbothered lives. To me, they’ve always felt like symbols of freedom, joy, and quiet strength.
My love for pelicans started in childhood, during visits to St. Petersburg, Florida, where my grandfather and his extended family lived. I was drawn to the wildlife—the manatees, the coastal air, and most of all, the pelicans. Fast forward to 2012, my senior year of college: I took a spring break trip to Mexico… with my parents and 80-year-old grandma (yes, wild times!). Between my kitesurfing lessons, my grandmother and I would sit and watch the pelicans. That trip sparked my love for kiting—and cemented my bond with these birds.
My grandmother, an artist herself, started painting pelicans for me after that trip. A few years later, I asked her to sketch one for me, which I had tattooed on my shoulder. It became more than just a bird; it became a reminder of family, freedom, and the way art connects us across generations.
In 2023 my family and I made a longtime dream come true—we moved to St. Pete. It was there, surrounded by sun and salt air, that I started taking pottery classes. I fell in love with clay, with creating, with making beauty from the mess. And just like that, Pelican Pottery Co. was born—rooted in memory, movement, healing, and a deep love for these majestic birds that have followed me through every chapter of life.
Plus— who doesn't love alliteration?!
